Why is a threefold cord not quickly broken?
Because it’s
THE WILL OF THE THIRD CORD
Matthew 18:19-20 states; “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
And for years I have heard the 19th verse quoted as if it alone would give any two Christians an opportunity to open God’s grab bag of toys as if He were Santa Claus; as long as they agreed with each other.
It’s like if you wanted a new car, all you would have to do is get just one of your buddies to go with you to the dealership. Now this, according to what you have been taught about verse 20, would mean that Jesus will automatically meet you there, too.
Once there, you, your friend, and Jesus are all supposed to touch the car and agree that you are to have that car. And since Jesus is there and supposedly in agreement, it is going to be a done deal. Get the keys and let’s go.
After all, Ecclesiastes 4:12 states, “... a threefold cord is not quickly broken. However, for some reason the agree-touch-and-get trick doesn’t work.
Could this be because no one asked to find out the will of the third cord? Jesus was there, but was He really in agreement? After all,
1 John 5:14-15 states, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15: And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
Do you think we might need to understand a little more about what “in my name” means in these scriptures in Matthew? Perhaps it might be better to think of it as gathered “in my will”.
